While views about the EU may be positive globally, many people interviewed by Mostra said they had no knowledge, interest or opinions about the 27-member bloc. Polling carried out by Globescan in 2006 confirms widespread ignorance about the EU. When asked about their awareness of the EU’s role in the world, 29% of Russians did not answer or said they did not know. A quarter of north Americans, 22% of Asians and 21% of Latin Americans said the same.

“There is no understanding of what is behind the words ‘European Union,” says Mark Entin, Director of the European Studies Institute at the MGIMO University in Moscow. Adds Martin Walker, Senior Director of the Global Business Policy Council” “The mass of American voters don’t think about the EU at all.” Written quote
